What we offer:

Master Seikou will teach and lead you to obtain the grades for calligraphy approved by Japanese Calligraphy Association called Nihon Shuji. Students should commit to submit the completed calligraphy every month.

The grading starts from 10th Kyu (10級) to 1st Kyu (1級) and the proceed to more difficult grade of Dan (段). Dan starts from 1st Dan (1段) to 8th Dan (8段). Master Seikou holds the highest 8th Dan (8段).

Students choose subjects which are suitable to themselves.

Students will be introduced to next month assignment, receive guidance and are required to complete the assignment by the due date. They shall also receive guidance with online class and practice at home to finish.

Schedules:

Generally twice a month, in-person or online (in Zoom).

Class Subjects

Kanji (漢字)

Beginners (10 kyu~1 kyu):
Drawing of 4 kanji characters assignment in kaisho style.

Intermediate and advanced (1 Dan ~):
Drawing of 6 kanji characters assignments in kaisho style.

All students also learn to draw in gyosho , sousho, and other styles and hiragana.

Rinsho (臨書)

Learning the calligraphy styles of renowned ancient Chinese and Japanese masters who helped contribute to the foundation of Chinese calligraphy (especially gyosho and kaisho. It is for students who would like to explore the cultural background/knowledge and to obtain technical skills. Rinsho will improve Chinese calligraphy skill and make the work brilliant.

Kana (かな)

Kana is unique Japanese characters derived from kanji or Chinese character. It is usually found in an old Japanese poem (waka 和歌)and the beauty of the calligraphy is matched with the tone of waka poem. The students therefore find and learn the harmony of rhythmical pattern and flowing line of kana calligraphy style.

Bokuga (墨画)

Sumi ink drawing. One of the art form drawn by a calligraphy brush and sumi ink. Sumi ink drawing is to some extent related to Chinese calligraphy than watercolor painting so the calligraphy skill is applied onto the paper. Simple lines and shading of sumi ink create an awesome art!

Pen Shuji (ペン習字)
– Hard tip pen calligraphy

Pen shuji is the essential writing form in daily life in Japan. The pen shuji lesson is structured by Master Seikou’s own concept of how pen shuji should be: practically fast writing yet retained neatly in lines with some influence from kana (old Japanese calligraphy) style.
